Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor dazzled on the ramp as Kunal Rawal celebrated the 15th year milestone of his brand at the FDCI India Couture Week 2022. Master in showcasing wearable-art-like couture, Kunal Rawal emerges as a leading beacon of luxe minimalism causing a paradigm shift in the way people view menswear. Kurtas changing colour in the sun, sherwanis that glow in the dark, and reimagined traditional silhouettes which are gender-neutral, are the designer’s signature who is always pushing the envelope with endless possibilities.
‘Dear Men’ was the theme of his signature multi-functional approach to design at FDCI India Couture Week. Inspiration for the collection was drawn from the medley of cultural and traditional influences prevalent in India. The collection caters to the whole spectrum of celebrations ranging from modern luxury to deep-rooted traditional wear. The designer has created sartorial alchemy of ensembles that can be easily elevated or toned down, mixed or matched, or can even be worn to work.
Actor Arjun Kapoor exuberated flamboyance as he walked the ramp in a tone-on-tone embellished sherwani. The sherwani was the night’s highlight piece crafted with signature hems and ornamented with Polki buttons with another Malaika Arora cheering him wearing a Kunal Rawal number herself – a bandhgala with a cropped top and skirt which was fashioned in golden waffle embroidery. Other notable people in attendance were – Anaita Shroff Adajania, Mohit Marwah and Antara Motiwala, and designer Arpita Mehta.
The designer is a big-time believer in asexual and gender-fluid pieces and loves experimenting with structured pieces complimented by new silhouettes. His current collection is abounding with flattering garments for every form, shape, and style seen in Jackets with built-in stoles, pattern play, and intriguing textures representing the brand’s gene. The deceptively complicated sherwani looks to allow for making statements by just pulling on a single piece or deconstructing it into multiple looks. The eponymous label has explored its design sensibilities which are freeing gender stereotypes – making fluidity the new norm.
This collection set the stage for meaningful interactions between the audience and the designs in addition to fulfilling needs varying from comfort, mood, functionality, and wearability. Aiming to dress the diversity in its entirety, Kunal pays attention to every nook and corner in his designs and has models of different ethnicities, ages, height, and body types swaggering down the runway in uniquely crafted and styled pieces from the collection. Diversity in creations echoing the diversity of India with clothes of different shapes and sizes, the label ensures the wearer is having fun throughout.
Collection by Amit Aggarwal
Collection by Amit Aggarwal, also commonly referred to as AA, and a Delhi-based couturier renowned for his iconic and glamorous fashion wear, for the FDCI India Couture Week In Association with Lotus Make-Up celebrates a fact that we are the glitch in time: warping forms, straddling realms, embracing eternity. It is a refreshing bookend to FDCI’s decade-long part-miraculous, part-fantastical journey through which runs a constant thread of morphing forms and blurring the inescapable folds of time. Today the digital space is accommodating the whimsical aspects to ourselves not accessible in the physical world representing a kaleidoscope ode to the fact that we are at an interesting bend in time. Every silhouette shows that we carry the echo of the first human and hold the inception of the future – overlaid on the fine-grained realities of the present.
Aggarwal is a specialist in showcasing the concept of sustainable fashion wear. His ethos reflects in his creation. Usage of recycled material to create modern silhouettes that are adorned with traditional Indian craftsmanship is a special feature in AA’s creations. The combination of the Silhouette cut, the pattern of the outfit flow, the strategic placement of the floral motifs and other elements as well as the metallic fabric makes the creation from this fashion label truly mind-blowing and timeless fashion. The designer is also known for his out-of-the-box bridal collection which is a fusion of traditional and contemporary design ideas. His collection uses recycled plastic, industrial materials, bindi sheets, and other such recycled material that is hard to be thought of as the fabric base for fashion wear. Therefore, the fabric is the USP of the brand that makes it shine like a bright star amongst the crowd of fashion designers showcasing their collection. While watching his collection the audience was transported into the world of futuristic fashion.
